What's on TV? Wednesday, October 13, 1965

I thought about spotlighting Monday's programming from this week's Minnesota State Edition, but since the networks are probably preempting most of it for the papal visit, that obviously won't do. What days of the week haven't I done yet? Oh, what the hell—let's just pick one.

 Wednesday it is!

A note on what you see in the listings: there is, indeed a sixth game of the World Series (Twins 5, Dodgers 1), which affects the programming on NBC and WTCN (the Twins' home network). The game lasts 2:16, which places the end around 3:00 p.m., plus any post-game coverage.

  1. Two of the CBS stations (3 & 8) are showing Bewitched. Wasn't that ABC?

    1. ABC didn't have full-time affiliates in those tv markets at the time, so other stations would carry the network's more popular programs. Since BEWITCHED ranked #2 nationally the previous season, it was certainly ABC's most popular program.

  2. Ch 8 LaCrosse chose to replace Irwin Allen's Lost In Space with an episode of Irwin Allen's Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea??? What did that do to his royalties?

    1. That must have killed him! But to be fair, Voyage did have a longer track record at that point, by a year. Possible they saw it as a better bet.

    2. Also VOYAGE was in color that season, while LOST IN SPACE was not in color until the next season. I imagine his royalties, if they were dependent on # of stations carrying his show, would be the same as if the station didn't carry LOST IN SPACE, since LaCrosse didn't have an ABC affiliate to carry VOYAGE at the time, though they would've been greater if the same station carried both his shows.

  3. I notice Lost In Space isn't aired on 3 of the 5 CBS stations in its 6:30 slot. What would have been the reason for that? The show had just premiered a month earlier, so that would have been the fifth-ever episode with some pretty good hype for the series. Any thoughts on that Mitchell since you are a Twin Cities expert?

    1. I can't speak for the outstate stations; they may have aired it on a different night (I noticed, for instance, that WKBT showed "The Steve Lawrence Show" on Thursday at 10:30, rather than Monday at 9:00) although a quick look at the listings didn't turn anything up. It's true that WCCO was notorious for preempting network programs; the station had a long history of producing distinguished public affairs programs, for instance, and they often aired those in place of whatever the network had on. The "Roundy Predicts" show was seasonal (football predictions), so for the fun of it I pulled out an issue from December of the same year, after the college season would have ended--sure enough, "Lost in Space" was on. Sometimes, though, CCO's programming decisions defied explanation.

  4. Thank you for your reply Mitchell. I was a big Lost in Space fan, particularly during that first black-and-white year as an impressionable 8-year-old before the show got away from its suspenseful mood and became more slapstick in the later years. I have lived my entire life in the Pittsburgh TV market and I don't recall a whole lot of network pre-emptions such as this over all these years except back in the day when Pirates games were on CBS KDKA. Anyway, I love reading all this old TV stuff. Thanks for this site.
