Then, there's KROC's Mike Douglas Show at 4:00 p.m., with Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser and Fred Rogers, host of the children's program Misterogers. The show just started earlier this year so not a lot of people know about him yet. They will. WCCO's version of the Douglas show has George Hamilton and Hank Williams Jr. - Hamilton, of course, played Hank Williams Sr. in Your Cheatin' Heart in 1964.
The College All-Star football game is on at 8:30 p.m., not only on the ABC affiliates, but on KCMT in Alexandria and, because of the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, WKBT in LaCrosse, WI, and WEAU in Eau Claire, WI. In the days before the NFL became a year-round thing, people were ready for it by August, and the starters played a lot more than they do nowadays.
The listings come from the Minnesota State Edition.

I used to love the College All-Star Game, the first football game of the new season. If I watched in 1968, it was by accident; by the next year I'd have been deliberately tuning in. Since sometime in the 30s, a team of top college stars played the defending NFL champions, and sometimes they won. (Not in 1968, when the Packers took them down easily, 34-17.) The game lasted until 1976. That year it was called in the 3rd quarter due to a Biblical thunderstorm during which fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts. It was never held again.
ReplyDeleteFirst things first:
ReplyDelete- Joe Feliciano -
- is a typo.
That simple.
When TV Guide used that itsy-bitsy typeface for its listings, there were lots and lots of typos.
Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation.
- I haven't got this issue (in its Chicago edition, anyway), so I can't recall if Channel 7 was bypassing the College All-Star Game, as it had to in years past (because the Chicago Tribune had a proprietary interest in the game which kept the telecast on Channel 9 for years).
In those past years, Channel 7 would show one of the RKO programmers from their Movietime USA cache (which nobody was betting on - probably).
I see that the ABC network had bucked Man In A Suitcase and Judd For The Defense to the earlier timeslots (normally these shows would air at 8 and 9 pm, Central Time, in Minn-St.Paul).
Thanks to the grab at the head of the post, I recognized the Judd episode as one of their whodunits, which featured a bravura performance by Cousin Chill Wills as (what else) a rich Texan whose son was trying to confess to a murder (complications ensued).
I also note a Star Trek episode that I didn't recognize, because I was not (and to this day am not) morbidly devoted to that latter program.
- Not much else I can comment on here, so I'll go off-topic and note Episode 51 of Eventually Supertrain, which popped up this morning.
What I found most amusing was your wonderment at Bourbon Street Beat and Twilight Zone using the same type font for their closing credits.
Since the two programs debuted about a week apart in the same year (1959), the Simple Explanation is that the graphics guys at Warners and CBS simply came to a coincidental choice of lettering - or would that be too easy for you?
- About the Bourbon Street Beat episode: I don't believe Mr. Budnik ought to hold his breath waiting for word from Mr. Perkins (the story writer), who passed on in 1951, Mr. Spier (Gypsy Rose Lee's brother-in-law), who passed on in 1973, or Mr. de Toth (the director of the original 3D House Of Wax), who passed on in 2001. (Warner Bros TV was a believer in full employment.)
_ … and I still think you're missing out by not playing the full Bourbon Street Beat theme song, one of the better Mack David-Jerry Livingston WB-tec themes.
Two notes:
ReplyDelete(1) I suspect Charles Kuralt was substituting for Walter Cronkite because the latter was enroute to Miami for the next week's GOP Convention, and,
(2) I thought it was a typo that the college All-Star Game was in black-and-white, but I did some research, and apparently, Solider Field in Chicago's lighting at the time wasn't bright enough for color TV. It was probably the last network TV sports event originating in the United States to be telecast in black-and-white.
