This week we're in Philadelphia, all set to have a good time. We're halfway through the first month of the year, and as you'll see, some of the new season's hopefuls are already dropping off the schedule. ABC has it particularly tough; Vince Edwards' return to series television ends with the final episode of Matt Lincoln, followed by the end of the first half of the Neil Simon sitcom duo, Barefoot in the Park, and Christopher George's Fugitive-like series The Immortal. Matt Lincoln will be replaced by the debut of Alias Smith and Jones, while Barefoot makes room for Danny Thomas' Make Room for Granddaddy. Whoever said April was the cruelest month obviously wasn't a television producer.

Bill Lear on TODAY! The Lear Jet founder was a real life friend of Bob Cummings who became a character on LOVE THAT BOB in fictionalized form, played by John Archer.
ReplyDeleteThat is great! I LOVE stories like this!
DeleteLooks like the Merv Griffin episode is a salute to silent film stars. Chester Conklin would pass away that October, so likely this is his final public appearance.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct! I don't know if they were all on stage, or if some of them appeared only via film, but I'll bet it was good.
DeleteAbout that Merv Grifin show:
DeleteMerv wrote
it up, briefly, in one of his memoirs.
Everything that could have gone wrong, did.
Buddy Rogers arranged for a phone interview with his wife, Mary Pickford, who proved to be incoherent; the call couldn't be used.
Ken Maynard, the old cowboy star, was "overserved" (to use the current phrase); his segment had to be heavily edited.
A couple of the other old stars required severe editing as well.
You'll note that this show had been "postponed from December 10th".
Now to see if this one gets through ...
My confuser is going berserk on me.
ReplyDeleteThis is a test.
If it goes through, I may have a comment.
Back whenever ...
We're waiting! :)
