What's on TV? Wednesday, January 27, 1954

These early 1950s Chicago TV Guides have an interesting way of describing programs—short and to the point, and kind of colorful. Take this description of Irv Kupcinet's show: "Gossip and interviews." Well, yes. Herbie Mintz: "Melodies, old and new." OK, it you say so. Some of them are kind of banal, but no less truthful, such as Winston Burdett's news program: "A look at the headlines." Can't deny that. On Kids' Karnival: "Clowns entertain the kids." (Funny; I thought that was C-SPAN.) Stuart Brent's show: "Advice and information for women." And Dorsey Connors' pre-late news show (labelled "Ideas"): "Reading in bed." Things really were simpler back then, weren't they?

  1. Jan. 22, 1954 fell on a Friday, the first day of listings for this issue. Are these listings actually for Wed., Jan. 27?
"Girls in Chains" - Maybe this inspired the infamous CHARLIE'S ANGELS episode "Angels in Chains" years later.

  2. Senior Moment Time:
Turns out that I did have this issue!
Later today, I'll give it a closer look, but in the meantime, let me tell you about Stuart Brent, who was pretty important in early Chicago TV.
Contrary to the quoted logline, Stuart Brent didn't exactly do what would be called a "woman's show".
For fifty years in Chicago, mainly on Michigan Boulevard north of the Loop, Stuart Brent had an independent bookstore which was the best-known and most popular in the city; every well-known writer made a point of visisting the store whenever a book tour brought them to Chicago.
Red Quinlan, who ran WBKB (Channel 7), the ABC-owned station in Chicago, put Brent on early in the '50s - and kept him there for over a decade, usually in mid-mornings.
The show was called Books And Brent, and that was what it was about: Brent discussing books for fifteen minutes a day.
Brent, who somewhat resembled the actor Sydney Pollack, was voluble and enthusiastic - on camera, he was a very compelling presence, much as he was at his store when you spoke to him in person.
Unfortunately, the Business changed, and even Red Quinlan wasn't able to keep him on Channel 7 much into the '60s; mid-decade, when Quinlan was launching Channel 32 for Marshall Field and the Sun-Times, he tried to bring Brent back, but the times had changed ...
Anyway, Stuart Brent kept his Boul Mich bookstore going, surviving real estate battles for years, until he retired from the business in 1996; he passed on in 2010, aged 98.
His various children kept going in the literary business, but that's several other stories ...
I just thought I'd pass that story along, for whatever it's worth; more later, if I can think of it ...

  3. Lloyd Pettit would later move down the road to Chicago and become the longtime play-by-play voice of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team.

I don't know if he was there for the 1961 Stanley Cup championship but he passed away several years before the team won the 2010 Cup.

Some longtime Blackhawk fans to this day wonder how Lloyd Pettit would've called the overtime goal that won the team their first championship in almost fifty years.

    1. The one and only pro sports team that my father ever followed was the Chicago Black Hawks.
My family grew up in the Sixties and early Seventies with the voice of Lloyd Pettit: "There's a shot AND A GOAL!!!!"
That last was Lloyd Pettit's catch phrase; when Dick Marx composed "Here Come The Hawks", the team's fight song, it found its way into the lyrics.
Of course, Pettit was there when the Hawks won the Stanley Cup in '61 - back when there were only six teams in the NHL (and most of them were owned by the same guy - but that's another story).
Lloyd Pettit left the Hawks (and spotscasting generally) in 1976, to go into business for himself.
My father continued to follow the Hawks until the Wirtz family took the games off free TV and joined a pay-tv outfit; at that point Dad abandoned sports in its entirety - and that's yet another story ...
By the way, you can find "Here Come The Hawks" by Dick Marx, in its glorious whole, on YouTube.

    2. I LOVED listening to Lloyd Pettit in the early 70s, when we were able to get WMAQ-AM 670 on cold winter nights in Minnesota. I was already a Hawks fan (the only team of which I've ever been a lifelong fan) when I started listening to the games, and during those long years of exile in the World's Worst Town™, listening to him doing the home games on Wednesday and Sunday nights was one of my few links to the real world. And back then, I could sing "Here Come the Hawks" by memory.

I thought he would weep when the Hawks blew that 2-0 lead in the seventh game of the 1971 Cup Final, and I would have wept with him. Even after the three Cups of the 2000s, they never quite made up for that one loss...

    3. A lot of us used to wonder ...

After the games, when Lloyd Pettit would go out to relax, would he order "... a shot and a BEER!!!"
