What's on TV? Thursday, January 21, 1965

We're in Boston this week, with some additional stations from surrounding areas. Of course, we have some interesting items. For example, Regis Philbin, pre-Joey Bishop, pre-Kathy Lee! Can you believe it? WBZ, the NBC affiliate in Boston, carries Rege's nationally syndicated talk show, based on his successful local show out of San Diego, that started the previous October and would last another month. As was the case with the format followed by Mike Douglas, Rege would have a co-host that would be with him for the entire week. Although no guests are listed in the TV Guide, a little Internet research suggests his co-host for the week might have been Eartha Kitt. Because WBZ is carrying the Philbin show, The Tonight Show is being carried at 9:30 p.m. on WHDH, a CBS affiliate. Someone more familiar with the area could probably tell me why WBZ didn't carry the Carson show.

And then there's the Harry S Truman program on WTIC in Hartford. This is, I believe, Decision, a series of 26 half-hour episodes that were syndicated during the 1964-65 serason. It was originally proposed by David Susskind, but after failing to secure enough interest with one of the broadcast networks, he gave the project over to Screen Gems, who eventually put the series together. As Stephen Battaglio points out in his Susskind biography, it was possible that "network executives knew Truman was still not very popular with the public and certainly not as compelling on the TV screen as the "Give 'em hell, Harry" mythology that was later built around him." Perhaps this series had something to do with it; American Cinema Editors later named Truman the outstanding television personality of 1964.

  1. Mitchell, old friend:
If you're going to "repurpose" the old posts verbatim after some number of years, it might not be a bad idea to recheck the earlier appearances, to see if any comments you might have gotten would have answered the questions you posed, Back In The Day#tm.
    - such as the one I sent you in 2016, in which some commenter (me, actually) told you exactly why Regis Philbin's syndie talker preempted the NBC network back in '65 (that comment is still in your archive - I know, because I'm just back from looking it up).
I mean, really - I know from experience that an interstate move can discombobulate your record-keeping, but how hard is it to just look something up?
No harm, no foul - but remember this for next time, OK?

    1. Nah, a few grammatical changes here and there, but otherwise it's more fun to just put 'em back up there. Don't have much time anymore to do more than that.

    2. Group W's dispute with NBC forcing them to swap their ownership of Philadelphia station WPTZ for the network owned one in Cleveland, and their subsequent legal case over it, is why they didn't carry the TONIGHT SHOW in Boston--same in Cleveland, where it ran on the ABC station

Actually, by this time the Supreme Court had ruled in favor of Group W, and by summer the station now known as KYW would be returned to Westinghouse. Although in both cities mentioned the TONIGHT SHOW deals would continue for another year or so, Group W relocated production of THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW from Cleveland, where it began in 1961.

  2. Jinx Falkenburg on GIRL TALK. By this time, her TV appearances were rare, but I'd imagine she was still one of the most beautiful women on TV. Her brother Bob just passed away last week at age 95.

  3. I remember that TODAY guest Ralph Schoenstein wrote for TV GUIDE by the 1980s. I remember at least 1 article of his where he wrote about taking his young daughter to Sesame Place, an amusement park based on SESAME STREET in the Philadelphia area. That part still exists, but there was another Sesame Place attempted near me sometime in the 1980s that failed in less than 2 years.

  4. On the final House Party radio broadcast in 1967, Linkletter said he was starting to interview the "children of the children of the children" he talked to when the show began in 1945. He was either flattering himself, or those were pretty precocious kids in 1945.
