What's on TV? Saturday, February 19, 1966

When last we saw this week's TV Guide, the one with the missing pages and the clipped listings, we were left with exactly two days that contained untouched, complete listings: Saturday and Sunday. As much as it pains me to do so, having just looked at a Saturday last week, I had very little choice - after all, I'd just done Sunday the week before.

I don't know if, in all this chaos, I've taken the time to mention that this week's issue is from Iowa, including listings for the Quad Cities in Illinois. They're good listings - enjoy them!

  1. Ray Scherer and Robert MacNeil anchoring the NBC newscast. Man, the NBC News bench back then was not only deep, but solid.

    1. I've been wracking my mind trying to remember the piece that played as the NBC News theme. Anyone????

  2. Iowa sure loved its polka in 1966.
I'm surprised to see "Commercial" in a number of listings, especially the one for chinchilla. I though infomercials weren't allowed until the 80s. Anyone got some background?
Note "Gidget" is on Saturdays (its network airing was Thursday), but it's not in color. My first assumption was the Iowa stations couldn't air color--a lot of small stations could only air color on live feeds--but then the polka show is in color. Why was "Gidget" in monochrome then?

    1. Infomercials were ALWAYS permitted under the law - there were likely some NAB rules about infomercials but no laws against them. TV Guide would list them as "Commercial" or "Commercial Program" but wouldn't give details because, that would be a commercial in itself.

In 1966, ABC was still transitioning from an all-monochrome network to color. So some sitcoms were still in B&W. The Polka hour was likely color if the originating station had in-studio color cameras.

    2. Gidget was filmed in color, but most stations preferred to show other shows instead. That's why it airs in B&W on KTVO. Note that Ozzie and Harriet's final season was shot in color, but it's in B&W on WOI as is Hoppity Hooper-they are episodes from the previous week.

  3. WOI-TV out of Ames, IA, was and is still today an ABC affiliate, and all its programs listed are from ABC. Did TV Guide mistakenly list its affiliation with CBS here?

    1. At one point, channel 5 carried shows from all four nets (ABC, CBS, NBC and the late DuMont network). DM gave up its' ghost in '56; they lost NBC when WHO-TV came on in '54, then shared CBS with 5 until KRNT's (now KCCI) arrival on 7/31/1955. So yes, that IS a misprint.

  4. All-Star Wrestling...staple of Saturday night TV in the Midwest. It was sponsored by Gera-Speed. Verne Gagne promoted it in some areas, but in Nebraska it was Joe Zweiback's Gera-Speed. Zweiback even owned a parking lot near the Omaha Civic Auditorium.

    1. This show was the embryo that soon evolved into WWE.

  5. KTVO is listed as a CBS/NBC affiliate, but it also carried some ABC shows in this listing.

    1. CBS was KTVO's primary network during these years. They did carry a few NBC shows, mostly Bonanza and MLB/ASG/World Series telecasts-and some cartoons like Underdog. As fate would have it, ABC is now their only net.

  6. Is it just me, or does the color get drained from shows airing at 9 AM? Obviously, they made some mistakes here. Secret Squirrel and Mighty Mouse Playhouse were shown in color-and there is positive proof. It's kinda ironic that NBC, with most of its' shows in color, would have the nerve to show a B&W print of a Technicolor musical-or is that listing misleading? (John Daly alert!)

My award for most eclectic scheduling here goes to KTVO, which also serves Kirksville, MO. They have last week's Pro Bowlers Tour right behind this week's CBS Golf Classic, then a color college basketball game. Then later, they join the ABC network for Lawrence Welk, then back to CBS for The Loner and Gunsmoke. Trials of O'Brien is delayed from Friday at 9 PM (they obviously switched to ABC for The Jimmy Dean Show-or maybe NBC for Man from U.N.C.L.E.?).

Gotta like WOI's double feature after Bing at the Palace-both are foreign films (one was made in Italy, the other in Great Britain), and WOC (now KWQC) with 3 hours of fine drama, and two great westerns (both syndicated). And how about KQTV (now PBS station KTIN on ch. 25) going against the grain with their own Saturday Night Movie? Pretty ballsy move for a small market station. And speaking of wrestling, WWE superstar Seth Rollins hails from Davenport, one of those "Quad Cities"-the others are all in Illinois (Moline, East Moline and Rock Island).

Nothing like relaxin' with the telly on a weekend in Ioway.
